Scarlet LOVES to read

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

We have come across some really great books in our reading adventures and I thought I should start a running list.

Some are from our personal library and others are from the public library.  ALL of them are requested over and over again and even quoted by our 2 1/2 year old.  I am continually amazed at words she picks up from the books we read.  I’m not including the classics that she loves (Where the wild things are, Dr. Suess books, Golden Books, Disney books) because everybody knows about those–this list is for finding a fun new book to read (Plus it would take me WAY too long to make that list!) So here it is:

Fancy Nancy, Fancy Nancy and the Posh puppy, Bonjour Butterfly, and Fancy Nancy’s fancy words. -Jane O’Connor

Where did daddy’s hair go -Joe O’Connor (Essential for kids with bald daddies;) -beware your kid may start calling daddy “baldy” )

Belinda the Ballerina, Belinda and the glass slipper, Belinda in Paris, Belinda begins Ballet -Amy Young (About a Ballerina with huge feet!)

Scarlette Beane -Karen Wallace (After reading this Scarlet started saying her face was “red as a beet”–so cute.)

Posey Paints a princess -Harriet Ziefert

Never, Ever shout in a zoo -Karma Wilson

The Jewel box Ballerinas -Monique de Varennes

Tea for Ruby -Sarah Ferguson

Olivia, Olivia saves the circus, Olivia and the missing toy, Olivia forms a band -Ian Falconer

Dancing Granny -Elizabeth Winthrop

The day the babies crawled away -Peggy Rathmann

The real Princess; A mathemagical tale -Brenda Wlliams

Someday -Eileen Spinelli

Cindy Ellen; A wild western Cinderella -Susan Lowell (You seriously can’t read this without talking with a southern accent)

Little Red; A fizzingly good yarn -Lynn Roberts ( I LOVE this one–especially the part where the wolf burps up grandma.)

Princesses are not quitters -Kate Lum

Sarah’s little ghosts -Thierry Robberecht

Eleanor, Ellatony, Ellencake and me -C.M. Rubin

Pinkalicious -Victoria Kann (After reading this Scarlet would say her favorite color is “Pink, Pink, Pink!”

The Hallo-wiener -Dav Pilkey

Princess Peepers -Pam Calvert (super cute about a princess with glasses)

Katie and the Mona Lisa -James Mayhew

Ella Bella Ballerina and the sleeping beauty -James Mayhew

The Runaway Bunny -Margaret Wise Brown

Peite Rouge; A cajun red riding hood -Mike Artell

Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What do you see? -Bill Martin/Eric Carle

The Day it rained hearts -Felicia Bond (about making Valentines)

Whoo’s there? A bedtime shadow book -Heather Zschock (flashlight required–Scarlet has practically memorized it.)

The Empty pot -Demi

Shall I knit you a hat? A Christmas Yarn -Henry Holt (There are some great knitted hats in this one!)

The Fuchsia is now -J. Otto Seibold

Oscar Otter -Nathaniel Benchley (Scarlet calls the otter at the zoo “Oscar” because of this book.)

Alexander -Harold Littledale (about an imaginary friend)

Corduroy -Don Freeman

Edwina the Emu -Sheena Knowles (super cute–and I got it for a quarter! we’ve definitely read it more than 25 times.)

The magic Sewing Machine -Sunny Warner

Kitten’s first full moon -Keven Henkes (Scarlet tries again and again to use the word “reflection” but it usually comes out: “collection” she’ll get it right eventually–but it’s something she learned from this book)

Sleeping Bobby -Will & Mary Pope Osborne

Okay so that is enough for now!  I will post more in the future under this same category!
