Scarlet has worked SO hard on her Valentine box and now she has a fever and can’t go to school today!  Luckily our neighbor dropped off her box and Valentines so they could be distributed and collected so she won’t miss out completely.

ANYWAY Here is what we made it out of:

toilet paper tubes(or longer cardboard tubes to cut down to form the legs and head)

kleenex box

strong tape (I used Duct tape)

Plaster strips (the kind you wet and smooth out from a craft store)

paint

yarn

perm markers

hot glue/glue gun

scraps of paper/cardboard to roll into the horn and shape the ears

juice carton lid to put on the end of the toilet paper tube for the face.

PIC 1: recycle bits taped into place.

PIC 2: After shaping with plaster strips and painting

PIC 3: Hot Glued yarn for hair and tail and decorated to perfection by Scarlet;)

Inspiration: Lady Gaga + Sailor Moon

You will need:

One headband, Two milk carton lids, Two jewels, One avacado bag and a Hot glue gun/hot glue.

Easy peasy lemon squeezy:

Weave the headband through the mesh (cut to desired size).  Trim as necessary.  Hot glue jewels to milk carton lids.  Hot glue milk carton lids to headband.  Let cool and it’s ready to wear.  I am sure we will be making variations of this one–it’s a big hit.

Two day Encaustic Workshop in beautiful Yachats, Oregon August 13th & 14th
Taught by Jodie Cord at Bloom, an artscape L.L.C. (A short walk to the ocean!)

August 13th: Introduction to tools, materials and process.  You will learn Basic skills along with how to use collage, assemblage, stencils and mixed media in your pieces.

August 14th:  As you continue to work on your pieces you will learn to use Transfers and molds along with continuing to learn mixed media processes.  We will also go over how to hang and care for your work.

$120 for both days (sign ups before Aug 1st) $130 for later sign ups/$65 for one day option. *Beginners can choose to take only Day 1 and students with experience can opt to take only day two. If you are all for cutting costs and a good DIY project than this is for you;)

First save up some empties! (ie: milk jugs, detergent bottles…anything with a lid!)

Then pick up some Washing soda, Borax and a bar of Felsnaptha soap, all available in fred meyer, target, etc.) And Last: Make sure you have a pot big enough to hold four gallons!

Now that you are ready here is the recipe!

Homemade Liquid Laundry Detergent

• 4 cups of water.

• 1/3 bar of Felsnaptha soap grated or chopped up into small bits

• 1/2 cup washing soda (not baking soda).

• 1/2 cup of Borax (20 Mule Team).

• 4-5 gallon bucket or pot

• 3 gallons of water.

First, mix the grated soap in a saucepan with 4 cups of water, and heat on low until the soap is completely dissolved. Add hot water/soap mixture to 3 gallons of water in the 5-gallon bucket, stir in the washing soda and Borax, and continue stirring until thickened. Pour into your recycled containers and let sit 24 hours before use.

I have been using this soap for a while now and it works great.  If you like your soap to have a fragrance to it I’m sure you could add something, but for me not having an unnatural smell to my laundry is part of the point of making my own!

This soap may not be suitable for people with sensitive skin.
